Carpenter remanded for possessing fake dollar notes

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday remanded Sylvester Amenyo, a 33-year-old carpenter in custody for conspiracy, possessing forged currency notes and preparation to commit crime.

 

Amenyo, who pleaded not guilty, will reappear on September 7 before the tribunal chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah, who ordered that arrest warrants should be issued against three accomplices, Richard Kumah Adzraku, Ndueku and Ameke, alias big Joe, who are on the run.

 

Prosecuting, Police Superintendent Elizabeth Allandu said at dawn on August 26, the Panther Unit of the Police Service acting upon a tip-off, arrested Amenyo in an uncompleted house at West Legon in Accra.

 

Superintendent Allandu said when a search was conducted in Amenyo's room, a large quantity of fake US dollar bills, black and white papers cut into the size of the dollar, rubber stamps of banks and companies and chemicals believed to be used in printing fake currencies were found. 

 

The prosecutor said when interrogated, Amenyo claimed ownership of the items and mentioned Adzraku, Ndueke and Ameke as his accomplices. Ndueke and Ameke who are Nigerians are alleged to been using the fake currencies to dupe unsuspecting victims.

 

Superintendent Allandu said Adzraku, the Ghanaian leader of the gang was wanted by the police for duping a businesswoman of 11,000 dollars, through the same method.

Self-employed man remanded for robbery

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday remanded in custody a 28-year-old Henry Lamptey for assaulting and robbing a chop bar operator of 1.5 million cedis.

 

Lamptey pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, robbery and causing harm and will appear again on September 14.   

 

Police Inspector Joseph Anneh Kwame told the tribunal chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah that in the morning of July 17 the accused accosted the complainant, Ms Ernestina Twumasi who operates a chop bar near the department of national lotteries while she was on her way to work.

 

Lamptey who had alighted from a taxi near the offices of the Ghana News Agency ordered Ms Twumasi to surrender her handbag.

 

As she resisted, the accused pulled a knife and cut her on the left arm before snatching the bag containing the money.

Ms Twumasi was helped by passers-by to go to hospital and later made a report to the police.                                                          

 

Inspector Kwame said Lamptey was arrested at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle after Ms Twumasi had identified him.
