Osu rounds off Homowo festival

Accra (Greater Accra) 28 August 2000

The people of Osu Kinkanwe and Osu Ashante, on Saturday rounded off their annual Homowo festivities with the sprinkling of Kpopkoi, the traditional food at the Royal Mausoleum in memory of their ancestors.

The festival started on Sunday August 20, with the clearing of the path to the Mausoleum and the main festivities were held on Tuesday amidst the shooting of musketry, the pouring of libation, drumming and dancing and the singing of dirges.

The Homowo festival meaning hooting at hunger is the traditional festival of the Ga and Adangbe people to mark the end of a long period of hunger.

The sprinkling of Kpokpoi is to thank the gods of the land for a bumper harvest and to invite them to take part in the celebrations and to bless them with another successful agricultural year.

Nii Amaja III, Osu Ashante Mantse, who led the Asafo Group to the Royal Mausoleum, made a stopover at Osu Kinkanwe to pay respect to the Chief, Nii Nortey Owuo III and to inform him about the visit to the Mausoleum.
