Aflao (Volta Region) 24 August 2000

A 23-year-old man described by the police as a hardened criminal was on Tuesday sentenced to a total of five years imprisonment on two counts of unlawful entry and stealing by the Aflao Circuit court.

In the dock with Tetevi Abotsiga was Togbi Grunisky, also 23 charged with three counts of conspiracy to steal unlawful entry and stealing.

The accused both of whom pleaded guilty were jailed two years each on the first two counts and another three years each for the third count.

Their sentences will run concurrently.

The court presided over by Mr. Francis Opoku heard that on April 21 this year, at about one a.m. the accused persons stole a ram from a pen belonging to Mr. Kwasi Asamani, a retired soldier at Adafianu near Denu.

When Mr. Asamani noticed the theft at dawn he laid ambush at the Aflao border and at about 5.30 am the accused persons appeared attempting to cross the border with the ram.

The prosecution said Mr. Asamani raised the alarm and with the assistance of people crossing the border the accused persons were arrested and handed over to the police.
