Accra bourse in impressive performance

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 August 2000

All the major market indices of the Accra bourse closed stronger on Wednesday, pushed by Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) and Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), which gained 100 cedis and five cedis respectively.

However, equally proportional losses by Fan Milk Limited (FML) and British American Tobacco (BAT) nearly marred the impressive performance.

The benchmark GSE-All share index, which has seen poor performances for several weeks, was firmer by 7.82 points to end trading at 827.82 points from the previous close of 820 points.

Market capitalisation was up slightly at 3,585.24 billion cedis compared to 3,570.54 billion cedis on Monday.

The change for the year to date now stands at 12.45 points, up from 11.39 per cent at the previous session.

Traded volumes, led by GCB which sold 182,700 shares, went up by about 18 times to close at 217,400 shares from 12,300.

Apart from ABL, all the nine equities, which traded shares, sold what they posted. There were, however, no bids or sales in 13 equities.

On the broader market, there were four price changes - two positive and two negative.

GCB gained 100 cedis to close trading at 1,100 cedis. The bank on Tuesday announced an after tax profit of 57 billion cedis as at the end of June.

Cape Coast and Elmina Castles earn more revenue.

Cape Coast (Greater Accra) 24 August 2000

The Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, bagged 170,459,950 million cedis from admission fees between January and July.

The amount is 74,426,550 million cedis more than the 96,033,400 million cedis collected within the same period last year.

The Acting Central Regional Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), Mr. Raymond Agbo made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Cape Coast on Monday.

He said a total of 73,297 visitors out of which 10,581 were foreigners visited the castles during the period as against 122,654 visits recorded for the whole of last year.

He said out of the 73,293 visits the Elmina castle played host to 54,310 with the Cape Coast receiving 18,987, while 81,281 and 41,373 visits were recorded respectively, during the whole of last year.

Mr. Agbo said the Elmina castle has received more visitors because of the presence of qualified tour guides and that more of such guides will be engaged at the Cape Coast castle to increase the number of visitors.

He, however, expressed concern about the lack of communication facility at the Elmina castle and inadequate funding which has also made regular maintenance of the two structures impossible.

Foreign visitors to the castles pay 5 dollars for guided tours and half the amount for unguided tours, while domestic tourists pay 1,000 cedis and 500 cedis for guided and unguided tours.
