A 34-year-old driver, who lured a four-year old girl into his room and allegedly defiled her, was on Monday remanded in prison custody by a Sekondi Circuit tribunal.

Paapa Kantankyina pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on September 11. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Prosper Yao Aheto told the court chaired by Mr Frederick Miezah-Anyimiah that the accused invited the child to his house to collect coconut on March 8, this year.

He said the accused sent the victim to his room, put her on his lap and defiled her.

Inspector Aheto said around 5 p.m. the same day when the victim's mother returned from farm, she saw blood stains in her panties, as she got ready to bath her.  On further inspection, the mother detected that the girl had been defiled.

When the mother interrogated the girl, she mentioned the accused as the one who defiled her.

Inspector Aheto told the court that when the victim, police and the accused went to Assorku-Essaman, the girl was able to identify the room in which the ordeal took place.

Four suspected robbers remanded

Accra (Greater Accra) 22 August 2000

Four robbers who assaulted a driver and bolted with his taxicab on the Kwahu Abetifi road were on Monday remanded in prison custody by an Accra Circuit Tribunal.

Isaac Eshun Agyare, 25, Eric Kwesi Boateng, 29, Mark Maccarthy, 29,and Samuel Addy, 29, charged with robbery, pleaded not guilty. They will reappear on September 6.

The tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah heard that the complainant, Mr Solomon Adjei is a taxi driver who resides at Kwahu Nkwatia and plies the Kwahu Nkwatia-Abetifi road.

On August 5, this year, at about 5:30 pm Agyare and Boateng stopped the complainant's taxicab and asked him to send them to Abetifi. Mr Agyei charged them 6,000 cedis.

On their way, the two suspects asked him to pick Maccarthy and Addo who were also going to Abetifi. The driver obliged and when they got to the Abetifi station, Agyare further requested the driver to stop at a nearby house to enable them to collect some items.

Just as the driver had passed the station, three of the suspects pounced on him and beat him until he fell unconscious.

They dragged him out of the car into a gutter and sped off. They sent the car to Kokompe in Accra to sell.

Antwi said on August 8, this year, an informant who had heard radio announcements on the stolen vehicle, saw the car parked at Kokompe with the accused offering it for sale. He reported the incident to the police.

The prosecution said three policemen were detailed to impound the vehicle but when the accused saw them they sped off in the car. The policemen pursued them but they abandoned the car and took to their heels. They were however arrested with the assistance of some residents.
