Use festivals to promote peace, development - Arthur

Ajumako-Besease (Central Region) 08 August 2000

Mr. Jacob Arthur, Central Regional Minister has appealed to the chiefs and people of the region to use festivals to promote peace and development.

He noted that chieftaincy disputes undermine socio-economic and political development and asked the people of Besease to resolve the problem, which nearly marred the celebration of the annual Abangye festival.

Speaking at a rally to climax the festival at Besease on Friday, Mr. Arthur said work on the Besease Hospital, which was suspended about two years ago, has been re-awarded to a new contractor.

He refuted allegations that Mr. Kobena Biney, the District Chief Executive used his position to stop work on the project. The provision of infrastructure such as schools, toilet facilities, and electricity is an indication of the government's commitment to rural development.

Mr. Arthur appealed to the people to vote for Mrs. Mary Padmore-Dadzie, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam constituency.

He said that the government would always seek the welfare of the people and explained that the present economic hardship is the result of external economic factors.

Nana Kweku Bodaa II, Regent of the town, commended the government for connecting the community to national electricity grid and appealed to the government to construct street drains.

The festival was nearly disrupted when the youth protested against Nana Danfo Baah VI, Chief of Besease, from sitting in state to preside over the ceremony.

According to them Nana Baah had abdicated the stool for the past two years and saw no reason why he should sit in state to preside over the function and he left the scene for the ceremony to continue.
