African Americans undertake slave route tour
Accra
(Greater Accra) 03 August 2000
An
officer of the Education Department of the Museums and Monuments Board, Mr.
Ebenezer Gyamfi, on Wednesday called on the authorities to redouble their
efforts at reconstructing the dilapidated Usher Fort in Accra.
He
said the Fort, which was built by the Dutch in 1642 and where slaves were kept
before they were shipped abroad, was only partly reconstructed for
administrative purposes.
Mr.
Gyamfi made the call when a group of African-Americans and some cultural
troupes visited the fort. The visit was organised by the Centre for Savanna Art
and Civilisation (CSAC), a non-governmental organisation.
Ms.
Felicia Obuobie, Executive Director of the CSAC who led the group, said they
have visited site in the Volta, Central, Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions
through which the slaves passed on their way to the coast for shipment. They
have also
Visited
the Salaga Market, which was a slave market.
