Hearts stretch lead

Accra : With five more matches to go, champion club, Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday stretched their lead to 12 points in the ABC Premier football league when they beat visiting Sekondi Hasaacas 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

It was Hasmal who made early incursions in the game and succeeded in snatching the leader in the 4th minute through Nana Adarkwa when he latched onto a pass from John Ainoo to hit a volley into the net. Hearts' Osmanu Amadu however put them on level terms two minutes later when he hit a powerful freekick from the edge of the box.

The rest of the first half was evenly fought with Hasaacas' veteran left winger, Kofi Abbrey, exhibiting some dribbling skills in midfield. Hasmal was robbed of more goals as they hit the post twice but were unable to score.

In the second half, Hearts beefed up their team by bringing on Emmanuel Yartey, Edmund Copson and Osei Kuffour for Desmond Amoah, Joe Ansah and Charles Allotey while Hasaacas replaced John Ainoo and Nana Adarkwa with Kofi Sammy and Ekow Ghansah.

Hearts were however, to have the last laugh when Sani Wahab put them ahead from the penalty spot in the 76th when a hard pressed Hasaacas defender was judged to have handled the ball. Hassacas deputed the decision and held up play for about tow minutes. .

King Faisal subdue Kotoko

Kumasi : Relegation haunted, King Faisal yesterday brightened their chances of staying in the premier division when they routed Kumasi AsanteKotoko 3-1 in their local derby at

the Kumasi Sports Stadium. Kotoko, who lost 0-2 to RTU at Tamale last Sunday, and were expecting a win to restore confidence in their teeming supporters, were shocked by Alhaji Grunsah’s Faisal when newly-found, Eric Gawu put them in the lead in the 20th minute.

Fleet-footed Faisal could have hit a cricket score as they proved devastating in attack after the goal but the agility of goalkeeper Oscar Asamoah proved a barrier as he stood between his team and disgrace. Faisal could however not be denied their second goal in the 41st minute when Gawu intercepted a pass to squeeze one through the legs of keeper Asamoah to end the first half.

Back from recess Kotoko were further unsettled when under two minutes, tormentor Nana Frimpong hit the upright with a powerful free-kick that dropped into the net.

With their confidence shaken and pride at stake, Kotoko thereafter fought bravely to redeem their image but Faisal remained resolute as they multiplied in defence.

Kotoko however managed to redeem a goal in the 71st minute when Adu Poku rounded the Faisal defencemen and crossed from the left for Isaac Asare to score with a low shot.

Adu-Poku was unlucky not to have scored a personal one in the 80th minute when he saw his well timed shot punched to corner by Sampson Ampiah in post for Faisal. As the minutes ticked by Kotoko attacked in bursts but try as they did they could not penetrate the iron-clad defence of the ‘royals’ until Ref. Samuel Thompson blew his final whistle.

Afienya draw with RTU

Tema : Poor marksmanship on the part of Tema Afienya United robbed them of the three maximum points as they drew 0-0 with visiting Real Tamale United (RTU) at the Tema Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Afienya were unfortunate not to have earned a penalty the 13th minute when a hard-pressed RTU defender handled the ball in the box.

Referee Alex Quartey of Accra who was standing close to the action waved for play to continue to the disagreement of the few supporters at the stadium.

In the 28th minute, Afienya, had a good chance to score but Philip Ntsiful standing unchallenged in front of goal shot wide.

When the Tamale lads settled for the game they pinned the homesters to their own half with little Stephen Oduro directing affairs from the midfield but could however not translate their superiority into goals.

RTU were still probing for goals when the second half started but it was Afienya who nearly caused havoc when they hit the cross bar with a glancing header that was quickly tidied by RTU.

The game became a ding-dong battle with nothing much to cheer until the final whistle was blown.

Olympics beaten

Koforidua: Power F/C yesterday avenged their first round loss to Accra Great Olympics piping them 2-1 at Koforidua.

It was Olympics who took the lead in the 55th minute through substitute Wisdom Abbey but Power equalised five minutes later through Ebo Mensah when he blasted the ball into an empty net. This was after the goalie had collided with one of Power’s players and they were both lying on the turf. However, Ref. G. K. Zorve ruled it as a goal infuriating the Olympics supporters at the stadium who disrupted play for about 10 minutes before the few security men around could restore order.

Goalkeeper Quaye had to be replaced by substitute by Mohammed Alhassan as a result of the clash but this did not stop Power from scoring the match winners in the 78th minute through Moses Amoako.

Olympics who needed a win to stay at the second spot of the league table piled on pressure but try as they did they could not find the net.

Drama erupted at the stadium when Referee Zorve whistled for the end of the match on the 90th minute stroke as the irate Oly fans, joined by some players charged on him to demand an injury time claiming the match was stopped for more than five minutes during playtime. Oly’s midfielder Tahiru Briamah pulled his jersey over his head to hide to conceal his identity and struck the Referee in the process but he was caught by the Police.

Dwarfs win at home

Cape Coast : Cape Coast "Ebusua" Dwarfs collected the maximum three points when they beat Dawu Youngsters 1-0 in their match played at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

It was a 34th minute goal scored by midfielder Awal Mohamed when his beautiful header to a cross from the right flank sailed into the net that proved to be the match winner.

Dwarfs, after this goal multiplied in defence and soaked all the pressure from the visitors who fought tirelessly but to no avail.

At Obuasi, indecision on the part of referee N.A Vanderpuye from Accra marred an otherwise good afternoon of beautiful soccer when he whistled for an 89th goal for Goldfields against Tema Ghapoha but later changed his mind.

Afienya had protested immediately Ref. Vanderpuye had whistled for a goal and he was quick to reverse his decision saying it should be a drop ball but no sooner has he done that before Goldfields players also protested holding play up for about fifteen minutes. The match thus ended abruptly.
