Suspected armed robber remanded

Unemployed charged with defilement

Accra (Greater Accra), 30th August 99

An Accra Community Tribunal on Friday remanded Yaw Abayavor, a 28-year-old unemployed, in police custody for allegedly forcing a 13-year old girl to have sex with him.

The plea of Abayavor, who is charged with defilement, was not taken and he will appear again on September 17.

The tribunal chaired by Mr Kwadwo Owusu ordered that the accused person to be sent to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital for examination because of his ill-mannered demeanour at the tribunal.

While in the dock, Abayavor turned his back to the panel with his hands raised.

Police Inspector Alex Yartey Tawiah said the complainant is a trader who lives at Taifa New Town in Accra with the victim who is her maidservant.

The prosecution said at about 2 pm on August Six, when the trader went to market, Abayavor, who also lives at Taifa, sneaked into a room in the house where the victim was sleeping.

He struggled with the victim, until he succeeded in dragging her from the room and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her under a shed.

Inspector Tawiah said in the process of the sexual intercourse, a carpenter who was roofing a house near the scene saw them and hooted at them.

He said Abayavor took to his heels. When the complainant returned, she was informed and she made a report to the police.

Suspected armed robber remanded

Wa (Upper West), 30th August 99

The Wa Circuit Court has remanded A 37 year old man who appeared before the Wa circuit court with a leg wound has been remanded in custody under the suspicion that the would could have been sustained during an armed robbery.

The plea of the suspect, Tariq Aziz Donbo was not taken and he is to re-appear on Monday August 30, before being transferred to Accra for further interrogation.

Police Inspector Stephen K Dobara told the crowded court presided over by Mr. G .K Adzagli that the Wa police on August 17, had information that a suspected armed robber had taken refuge at the Zongo and was treating a fractured leg believed to be the result of a gun shot at a private clinic.

He said policemen were immediately dispatched to the area and Donbo was arrested for questioning but denied he denied any involvement in armed robbery claiming that he was a professional driver living at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region.

Inspector Dobara told the court that his explanation was not convincing since he failed to tell the Police how he got injured on his left leg and why he travelled all the way from Techiman to seek treatment at a private clinic in Wa.

He was therefore sent to court and remanded in custody to enable the police conduct full investigation.
