Driver before tribunal for alleged incest

Accra (Greater Accra) 26 Aug. '99

A 37-year-old driver with Audit Service in Accra, who allegedly had sex with his 10-year-old daughter, appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra on Wednesday charged with incest.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted 10 million cedis bail with one surety to be justified. He will appear again on August 31.

The tribunal, chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yeboah, heard that following a quarrel between the driver and his wife, the woman left the matrimonial home at Lartebiokorshie to live with her mother at Kwashieman, living her daughter behind.

On June 23, the driver informed his wife that their daughter was ill. The woman went for her daughter and noticed that her vagina had been mutilated.

Upon interrogation, the victim said her father threatened her with a knife and sexually assaulted her last Christmas and on June 18.

The prosecutor said the victim's grandmother made a report to the Women and Juvenile Unit of the Police Service (WAJU), who arrested him but he denied the allegation during Police investigation.

The victim attended Kaneshie Polyclinic and was referred to a gynaecologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Suspected pipeline thieves nabbed

Tamale (Northern Region) 26 Aug. '99

Tamale Police have arrested five persons suspected to be members of a syndicate that has been stealing pipelines and other accessories in the municipality.

The thefts have resulted in the interruption of water supply to the municipality.

Ibrahim Abdulai, 39, Adam Abdulai, 35 and Masawu Abdulai, 40, all traders, and Ayana Iddi, 35, Alhassan Amadu, 25, both truck pushers, were rounded up at the weekend.

They had in their possession 88 PVC pipes and 10 assorted valves. The valves are estimated at one million cedis, while the value of the pipes is yet to be determined.

Mr David Walenkaki, Commissioner of Police for Special Duties (Operation Gong-Gong IV) told newsmen on Tuesday that the anti-armed robbery squad on night patrol spotted the suspects digging trenches along Lamashegu road after midnight.

He said the suspects on seeing the team abandoned their digging implements and took to their heels, but were later traced to their homes.

Mr Walenkaki said the suspects, who made their first appearance in court on Tuesday, have been remanded in Police custody, while the owner of the house has been invited for questioning.

He described the suspects as "subversive elements", who are more dangerous than armed robbers are since their activities had adversely affected the whole community.
