Kotoko fall at Tamale

Tamale : After flooding Tamale with twelve bus loads of supporters, Kumasi Asante Kotoko went down 2 - 0 against a determined Real Tamale United (RTU) team in their 24th week ABC Premier league encounter played at Tamale, last Sunday.

The Sakasaka Park which is proving a waterloo for the Fabulous boys witnessed one of its biggest crowds this season and saw RTU kick-off on a fast note with early incursions that nearly resulted in a goal in the 3rd minute. A two-man move between centre forward Abass Iddrisu and inside left Shilla Alhassan, displaced the Kotoko defence but Shilla, in a good position to score, shot off target.

Kotoko were soon to turn the heat on their opponents as Baba Armando Adams and Prince Adu Poku found their rhythm and managed to create holes in RTU’s defence. In the eighth minute Baba Adams was unlucky to score as his goal-bound shot hit a team-mate to miss direction.

The homesters however, taught Kotoko the scoring lesson when in the 27th minute diminutive Steven Oduro converted neatly from the penalty spot after Baba Adams, who had fallen deep into defence, handled the ball.

Sensing danger Kotoko mounted a siege in RTU’s half in a bid to equalise but could not redeem the score till half time.

On resumption Kotoko decided to play it tough but the no nonsense Ref. Emmanuel Bissi flashed his yellow card three times on three of their players to stamp his authority.

As Kotoko kept pressurising for the much needed goal RTU caught them unawares when Fatawu Arola picked a loose ball from the centre circle and galloped past his marker only to be brought down heavily by goalkeeper Oscar Asamoah in Kotoko’s post. Referee Bissi once again did not hesitate to award a penalty which Steven Oduro rifle in one more time to give the Tamale lads a comfortable win that put them in the medal zone.

Olympics deepen Afienya’s woes

Accra: Accra Accra Great Olymipics’ Razak Pimpong and substitute Kwame Ali struck twice in the second half at the Accra Sports Stadium to register a 2-0 win over Tema based Afienya United and seal their journey to relegation next year.

Olympics who by the result moved to the second spot on the league table with 41 points, were held in check for pretty 70 minutes by unyielding Afienya, before the Black Starlets striker converted from a penalty to register their first goal of the afternoon. It was as a result of a move deep into the visitor's goal area defender Nii Noi Dowouna, who was brought down to earn Olympics the spot kick.

Spurred on by the sparse crowd at the stadium for more goals, the Wonder Club multiplied in their numbers in the visitors' area and succeeded in increasing their lead five minutes to time when Ali beat Afienya’s keeper with a low one.

Afienya launched a belated onslaught for a consolation goal with former Hearts player Mike Serwornu leading their attack but the defencemen of Oly ensured that the match end on a clean sheet by keeping their opponents at bay.

Bofoakwa shock Power

Sunyani : Bofoakwa Tano scored an impressive 2 –1 win over Power F/C in their match played at the Sunyani Coronation park.

Bofoakwa scored first when striker Adu Issah redirected a freekick into the net in the eighth minute.

Undaunted by the goal, Power mounted pressure on the homesters and it did not surprise anybody when Ebo Mensah equalised for the visitors in the 21st minute.

Bofoakwa whose survival in the elite division largely depended on the outcome of the game pushed more men forward who kept the visitors half of the pitch boiling.

In one of such raids Power’s hard pressed defender Kingsley Tetteh handled the ball in the box for Fuseini Bawa Bawa to convert for the homesters.

Dwarfs lose at Tema

Tema : Relegation haunted, Tema Ghapoha put up a splendid performance to beat visiting Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs 2-0 at the Tema Sports Stadium.

It was the Tema boys who showed early purposefulness and nearly found the net in the18th minute but with only goalkeeper Issaka Sulemana to beat Ghapoha's Bernard Bortey of Starlets fame headed straight into his hands.

There was nothing much to cheer about thereafter as the became a ding dong battle with the homesters slightly on top.

Bortey however atoned for his earlier misses in the game as he exploited a defensive mix-up to drive home the first goal in the 79th minute and Hope Azziz in the 85th minute sealed the doom of Dwarfs when he headed one past Sulemana.

Goldfields taste third defeat

Obuasi Goldfields suffered their third defeat on the trot when they were beaten 2-1 by Alhaji Grunsah’s King Faisal at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

It was an 89th minute own goal by defender Yaw Owusu who in an attempt to clear the ball headed it into his own net to give the homesters their win.

It was Faisal who scored after 33 minutes when striker Nana Arhin Duah latched onto a pass from Nana Frimpong to slot home the opener, but Goldfields were quick to equalise when three minutes later Guinean import, Momo Wandal headed a rebound past Sampson Ampiah in goal for Faisal

Faisal dictated the pace of the game after recess and were twice denied a goal when Goldfields defender Tony Arhinful scooped the ball from the goal-line in the 75th and 78th minutes.

Goldfields, from the 80th minute, were reduced to 10 men when Wandal was red carded after he kicked and felled Nana Frimpong of Faisal.

Faisal capitalised on their numerical strength to score the match-winner on the stroke of the 90th minute when hard-pressed Owusu headed the ball into his own net to send the handful of spectators into wild jubilation.
