CAF President lobbies Ghana's support

Accra (Greater Accra), 23rd August 99

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Issa Hayatou on Monday called on Vice-President John Atta Mills to drum up Ghana's support for his bid for re-election to the CAF presidency.

Mr Hayatou said Ghana is recognised as big a soccer nation world-wide and her support for him will enhance his chances for another term as CAF President and commended Ghana for accepting to co-host the upcoming Cup of Nations (CAN) tournament with Nigeria

The position of CAF President, as well as other executive slots, would become vacant in the year 2000.

He said CAF agreed that the two countries should co-host the tournament because they have good organisational skills, citing the Under-20 youth Championship played in Ghana last February as an example.

Prof. Mills expressed his gratitude to CAF for its confidence in Ghana and gave the assurance that the authorities would do their best towards a successful CAN in January 2000.

He said Ghanaians love sports, especially soccer, adding that co-hosting the tournament would help advance the progress of soccer in Africa.
