Girl remanded in juvenile home for abortion

A 16-year-old seamstress apprentice, Amma Bio of Manso near Tuobodom who pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to cause abortion and causing abortion has been remanded in the Sunyani Juvenile Home.

She is to reappear on 30th August this year. Her boyfriend, Kwame Gyasi, 22, is at large.

Chief Inspector Emmanuel Nketia told the tribunal, chaired by Mr Richard Kogyaphwa, that Amma Bio became pregnant in December 1998 and when she informed the boyfriend they planned to abort it.

He said on May 30 this year, Gyasi prepared a herbal concoction and inserted it in the private part of Amma Bio with the intention of destroying the pregnancy.

On May 31 Amma Bio experienced severe pains in her lower abdomen and went to a refuse dump near her house where she aborted the baby.

Chief Inspector Nketia said upon a tip-off, police visited the refuse dump and found the foetus and sent it to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital where it was buried after examination.

He told the tribunal that on June 7 this year, information reaching the police led to the arrest of Amma Bio but the boyfriend, managed to escape arrest.

She was taken to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital where an examination confirmed that she had had committed an abortion.

The chairman of the tribunal, Mr Kogyaphwa mandated the probation officer of the Department of Social Welfare to submit a report on the accused to facilitate sentencing at the Tuobodom Juvenile Court.
