Girl remanded in custody for dumping baby

Tuobodom(Brong Ahafo) 17 Aug '99

The Tuobodom community tribunal has remanded in custody an 18-year-old girl, Elizabeth Yeboah, for allegedly dumping her eight months- old baby boy into a pit latrine at Nsuta, near Techiman.

Elizabeth, whose plea was changed from guilty to not guilty, will reappear before the court on August 18.

She told the court that it was not her intention to dump her son into the pit.

The baby was rescued from the latrine by a team of police and fire service personnel from Techiman and Nsuta. He is said to be responding to treatment at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital.

Police Chief Inspector S.Y. Jeburi told the tribunal chaired by Mr Richard Kogyaphwa that Elizabeth is the daughter of Pastor Paul Donkor of The True Church of Ghana at Nsuta.

Police Chief Inspector Jeburi said Elizabeth habitually locked up her son in the room whenever she wants to go out.

The prosecution said the accused later adopted a strategy to dose the baby with drugs to prevent him from crying.

A visitor who called on Elizabeth on August 10 wanted to see the baby but she told her (visitor) that baby was asleep in the room.

The visitor did not find the baby in the room and she pressed to know the boy's whereabouts.

At this point Elizabeth, the prosecution said, confided in her visitor that she had dumped the baby into a toilet and warned her to keep it a secret or get killed by "Botwerewa" the powerful shrine in the district.

Chief Inspector Jeburi said the friend informed the police who led the accused to the pit into which the baby was dumped.

The police and firemen succeeded in retrieving the boy alive but with slight head injuries, Inspector Jeburi added.
