Soccer-Olympics thrash GHAPOHA 3-1 in ABC/FA Cup

Accra (Greater Accra), 12th August 99

Accra Great Olympics secured a semi-final berth in the ABC Golden Lager FA Cup when they thrashed Ghapoha F/C 3-1 in their quarterfinal match played at the Accra Sports Satdium on Wednesday.

Goals from Razak Pimpong in the seventh, Amui Quaye, 27th and Nana Eshun in the 60th minute, gained Olympics the passport to the next stage of the competition. Kwasi Lawson scored the only goal for Ghapoha in the 34th minute.

Olympics who started the game on an impressive note should have taken the lead in the fifth minute but Eshun's lob over onrushing goalkeeper Alfred Mills was parried to touch.

Two minutes later, Pimpong shot Olympics ahead when he connected home Eshun's free kick.

After the goal, Olympics continued to pile pressure on Ghapoha, but the visiting team changed the tide in their favour and made twogood attempts at goal in the 21st and 23rd minutes through Kwabena Boateng and Robert Amoako.

Olympics countered the Ghapoha attack and got their second goal in the 27th minute when Quaye nodded home from an Eshun cross from the right flank which goalie Mills failed to grab at the first instance.

Three minutes later, Quaye again planted the ball into Ghapoha's net but the goal was disallowed for offside positioning.

Ghapoha repulsed the attack and pulled a goal back in the 34th minute through Lawson when he finished off a two-man move between Boateng and Amoako.

Back from the break, Ghapoha started very strongly but could not maintain the pace, allowing Olympics to take

control and net their third goal in the 60th minute through Eshun,. He fired the ball into the Ghapoha's net from an acute angle when goalkeeper Mills punched a corner-kick onto his path.

Ghapoha made two changes, pulling out goalkeeper Mills for Joseph Mensah in the 65th minute and Lawson for Alex Awuah in the 79th minute.

The changes helped Ghapoha to pick up their game but wasted a 90th- minute opportunity when Boateng's header went off the crossbar.

The match between Ebusua Dwarfs and Real Tamale United at Cape Coast did not come off because the Tamale boys failed to turn up.

Soccer - Kotoko and Reggae Boyz draw in PANAFEST match

Kumasi (Ashanti), 12th August 99 –

Kumasi Asante Kotoko and the Reggae Boyz, Jamaica’s national team, settled for a 1-1draw in the PANAFEST football match played at the Kumasi sports stadium on Wednesday.

The Jamaicans last Saturday lost 1-2 to the Black Stars atthe Accra sports stadium.

The Jamaicans delighted the large crowd with their brand of school as they split open the Kotoko defence with their fast moves and daring raids.

The Jamaicans kicked-off brilliantly but conceded a goal as early as the second minute when Kotoko's play-maker and inspirer Baba Armando Adams was felled outside the "18".

The intelligent Kotoko player elected to take the kick and his curling shot veered off the Jamaican goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence.

The Jamaicans as if possessed attacked in bursts repeatedly confusing their opponents with crisp, short and accurate passes as the Kotoko players struggled to keep pace with the game.

The visitors deservedly got the equaliser in the 20th minute when a free-kick by right full back Davies Fabiah went wide off goalkeeper Micheal Abu.

Kotoko went onto the offensive forcing three corner-kicks in a three minute spell but the Jamaicans never gave up as they defended stoutly and warded off the menacing moves of the homesters.

Kotoko were denied a goal in the 34th minute when the Jamaican defence wilted under intense pressure but Burkinabe import Kambou Clovis' header to a cross from Prince Adu Poku was saved by the goalkeeper.

Kotoko made two changes when Isaac Asare and Gordon Ablordey took over from Kambou Clovis and George Siaw.

The substitutions changed the pattern of Kotoko who put their opponents under pressure.

Rampaging Kotoko wasted a corner-kick in the 46th minute and four minutes later, Armando Adams dummied the defence after he latched onto a pass from speedster Robert Boateng but his shot missed the side post.

The Jamaicans also made two substitutions when Linvad Doxon and Richardo Fuller were replaced by Donald Steward and Jeffar Cumminghan in the 59th and 68th minutes respectively.

Kotoko continued to control the game as they went all out but were unable to score in the 75th minute when Mohamed Polo's shot was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.

The Jamaicans in a swift counter-attack eclipsed the Kotoko defence which slit open but goalkeeper Michael Abu stretched to his elastic limit to push a goal-bound shot by Sue Curmel for a corner-kick in the 85th minute.

Marathon-Accra Milo Marathon scheduled for September 25.

Accra (Greater Accra),12th August 99

This year's 42-kilometre Accra Milo marathon, slated for Saturday, September 25, is being giving an added impetus with the introduction of a special event for children below 15 years.

Mr Andre Porchet, Managing Director of Nestle (Ghana) Limited, whose company is spending 107 million cedis in sponsorship, said the children's race would cover 10 kilometres.

Unlike that of the adults which will start from ‘The Point’ at Nungua, through some principal streets in the capital to the Dansoman Keep-fit Club, the under-15 event will begin at the Korle-bu Mobil filling station to the Keep-fit grounds.

The idea is to unearth talents among the children, nurture them in close collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr Porchet said and promised that those who excel would be sponsored to participate and represent the nation in international marathons.

Only 500 children with an authentic birth certificate will be registered beginning tomorrow, August 12 at the Pee Tay Limited, High Street, and the Dansoman Keep-fit club house. The adults will have theirs at the Accra

Sports Stadium and Ebony Restaurant at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle among other places.

The winner in the adults division takes home a cash prize of 800,000 cedis, Milo products, a trophy and a certificate while that of the under-15 receives a 500,000- cedi scholarship bursary, a certificate and products of the sponsors.

Mr Porchet said the prizes for the first and second runner-ups are being worked out and that over 270 consolation prizes would be given.

Mr Porchet, who took over from Mr A. J. Whitehead quite recently as the Managing Director, said two weeks prior to the start of the race, a van sales of Milo products will be staged along the marathon route to create awareness.

Mr John Ankrah, Secretary, Dansoman Keepfit Club, Organisers of the race said a three-day medical examination for both adults and under-15 athletes will be conducted from the August 22 to 24 at the Military hospital in Accra.

He said plans are afoot to ensure that those who cheat by joining taxis to meet their colleagues at the closing stages will be checked.

Mr Ankrah commended Nestle for being associated with the Dansoman Keep-fit marathon for the 12 out of the 14 years that it has existed.
