Kuffour beaten second time in African Best Player award

Johannesburg (South Africa) 17 April 2002 - Ghana’s Samuel Osei Kuffour, top defender of German soccer power-house, Bayern Munich, lost his second bid for Africa’s Best Player award in ‘South Africa on Tuesday. Kuffour was beaten to second place by Senegalese international, El Hadj Diof in a poll organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Cameroon’s Samuel E’to Fils came third.

Official results of the polls, announced in South Africa on Tuesday had the Senegalese 23 votes ahead of the Ghanaian at 96 to 63. Bemused Kuffour did not immediately talk to the press but stated later that the outcome buttressed the favour for strikers over defenders by administrators of the game. He said he gives thanks to God for whatever happened.

But back in Ghana many see Kuffour’s shocking miss as a slight by the continental body for compatriot Abedi Pele’s support for Sepp Blatter in the latter’s campaign for the FIFA presidency in May against CAF boss Issa Hayatou. “CAF has displayed it’s a bias organisation by this singular deed,” an Accra soccer fan uttered after the results broke on Tuesday evening.

This is the second occasion that Kufuor has come close to winning the coveted prize. In the 1999 award, the stalwart defender lost narrowly to Nigeria’s Nwankwo Kano at a time when many thought the Ghanaian had done what was enough to deserve the trophy.
