Accra (Greater Accra) 25 April 2001
The Greater Accra Women Soccer Committee (GAWSOC) said on Tuesday that it is ready to support a successful hosting of an under-19 Women's World Cup next year should the Ghana Football Association (GFA) embrace the proposal made by FIFA in South Africa last November.
Disclosing this to the press in Accra, Mr Fred Gyan Akoto, chairman of GAWSOC, said reports reaching him have it that FIFA president, Sepp Blatter has confirmed the decision during a recent visit to Ethiopia.
He said if Ghana fails to host the tournament, it will be either staged in Canada or Botswana.
Mr Akoto said if Ghana accepts the decision to host the tournament, not only will it add value and valour to women's football but it will also give Ghana many future opportunities.
He expressed regret that ever since the proposal was made, the GFA has been silent and this, he said, is not helping them to take the necessary steps.
Mr Akoto said an under-19 team has been formed already and plans are far advanced to form more of such teams in all the regions this year to enable them to unearth talents to join the team.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Post has expressed its interest to sponsor this year's Greater Accra Women Soccer Committee (GAWSOC) league, which will commence on May 12, according to Akoto.
The sponsorship deal was however, yet to be made available to the press.
Mr Akoto said this would be a relief since their major problem is financial constraints.

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 25
April 2001
Mr Ernest Debrah, Brong Ahafo
Regional Minister has emphasised that sports festivals are organised not merely
to give the youth the opportunity to win medals, but also to promote brotherly
understanding and mutual respect among competitors.
He said this in a welcoming
address at the opening of the seventh edition of the national primary schools
under-12 soccer championship in Sunyani on Monday.
"As people in the same
country, we have many things in common and we must strive to deepen the respect
and affection for one another through such sporting activities," he
stressed.
The Regional Minister urged the
young players to regard the competition not only as an avenue for unearthing
talents, but an opportunity for them to realise their potentials as well.
He, therefore, urged them to work
hard to develop their sporting talents, and let the achievements of sportsmen
such as Abedi Pele, Anthony Yeboah, Samuel Osei Kuffour, and others to spur
them on to the top.
Mr Debrah appealed to officials at
the competition to let fair play and common sense prevail in all their
decisions, so that the festival would achieve the desired objectives.
In an opening speech read for him,
the Minister of Education, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, dwelt at length
on the importance of sports and thanked Nestle Ghana Limited for spending about
71 million cedis for this year's championship.
Mr. J.K. Odoi, Ashanti Regional
deputy director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) presented a new giant
soccer trophy donated by Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, Asantehene, to the organisers of
the competition.
The new trophy replaces the old
one, which Ashanti Region has won for keeps, after emerging champions on four
consecutive times since 1996.
