Athletics-Nkansah
promises great comeback
Accra (Greater Accra) 24 April
2001
One of Ghana's topmost sprinters,
Eric Nkansah, has promised a great comeback and at least a medal in this year's
World Athletics Championship scheduled to take place in Edmonton, Canada in
August.
In an interview with the GNA
sports in Accra on Monday, the sprinter who has remained on a low profile as a
result of a muscle tear said that he is now in good shape and is training hard
for the championship.
"I'm hopeful for a great
comeback come what may", Nkansah said.
The athlete however admitted that,
it has not been easy during his long period of recuperation from the nagging
injury, which prevented him from participating in the Olympics.
"My performance went down
totally, it has not been easy for me to come out of such an injury, I lost a lot
of confidence and fighting spirit as a result but thank God I'm back on
track", he added.
The Germany-based athlete said his
focus is on the world championship and is working hard to improve on his time
to enable him join the Ghanaian team to Edmonton.
Nkansah, appealed to the Ghana
Amateur Athletics Association, (GAAA) to camp the team early enough to enable
them prepare adequately for the competition.
He also called on the GAAA to pay
more attention to the junior athletes and replace the tartan tracks as they are
now in a very bad shape.
"I see lot of potentials
after their competition against Togo and if they are giving the necessary
assistance, they will excel."
Nkansah said he is working hard to
strike a deal with some of the European athletic associations and colleges for
some of the young Ghanaian athletes to be given the needed exposure.
