Jealous girl in court for assault

Sekondi (Western Region) 21 April 2001

A 19-year-old student of Effutu Secondary Technical School, near Cape Coast, Wilhermina Appiah, on Thursday appeared before the Sekondi Community charged with pouring a mixture of pepper in the face of Madam Sabina Grant, a trader.

She pleaded guilty and was granted two million cedis bail with one surety to re-appear on May 28.

The tribunal, chaired by Mr Eric Baah, heard that in November last year, Madam Grant detected that her husband was having an affair with the accused Wilhermina and warned her to stop the relationship.

Wilhermina thereafter started casting insinuation at Madam Grant saying, "if you cannot take proper care of your husband I will take good care of him".

On April 6, at about 19:00 hours, while Madam Grant was returning home from town, Wilhermina, confronted her and poured a mixture of the pepper on her face and body.

Neighbours in the area went to the aid of Madam Grant and washed the concoction away before reporting the incident to the Police.

Baby thief goes in for 10 years

Sekondi (Western Region) 21 April 2001

A 19 year-old maidservant, Akua Dinah, who allegedly stole a two and half year-old baby girl, was on Friday sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

She pleaded guilty.

The Sekondi Circuit Tribunal, chaired by Mr Frederick Miezah-Anyimah, heard that the mother of the baby, Rebecca Pobee sells ice water at the Takoradi-Nzema Lorry Park and usually leaves her child with Hawa Sakinatu, a trader, anytime she went out to sell.

On April 7, Miss Pobee left the child with Sakinatu but she in turn left the baby in the care of her maid Akua Dinah to go to the market, but on her return she could not find both Dinah and the baby.

The Prosecution said investigations conducted by both Miss Pobee and Madam Sakinatu revealed that the accused and the child were spotted around the Elubo station but when they went there, they could not be traced.

Announcements were thus made on a local FM station before a report was made to the Police but all proved futile.

On April 12, the accused was seen in an Accra bound train with the child and was arrested and sent to the Takoradi Police Station.

Two artistes jailed

Sekondi (Western Region) 21 April 2001

The Sekondi Community Tribunal, chaired by Mr Eric Baah, on Friday sentenced two members of the Takoradi Kundum Cultural Troupe to various terms of imprisonment for stealing.

The two, Rainsbury A. Thompson, 28 and George N. Acquah 20, were sentenced to 24 months' and 12 months' imprisonment, respectively, with hard labour for stealing quantities of assorted drinks, empty bottles and two towels valued at 2.2 million cedis.

The Prosecution told the Tribunal that the troupe was invited to perform with other groups at the Busua Beach Resort.

While other troupes were performing, the two accused persons allegedly entered the storeroom of the resort and stole the assorted drinks.

In addition, they stole empty bottles and some towels belonging to the resort.

Nene Teye Dakli, the chief security officer of the resort, however, arrested the accused persons and handed them over to the Police.
