Exhibition of Commonwealth Writers opens

Accra (Greater Accra) 21 April 2001

A four-day exhibition of books written by Commonwealth writers opened in Accra on Friday to commemorate the 15th Edition of the prestigious Commonwealth Writers Prize (CWP) scheduled for Ghana from Monday, April 23 to May 2.

The Prize was established in 1987 to reward and encourage new Commonwealth fiction writers and to ensure that works of merit reach a wider audience outside their country of origin.

The Prize, which is awarded annually, is sponsored by the Commonwealth Foundation and administered by Book Trust in London.

Professor Kofi Anyidoho, Head of the English Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, opening the exhibition said although books are very essential in man's life, it is not given the needed attention and care.

A nation that marginalises the book industry is in danger of marginalising itself, he said and called on all and sundry to show a little more interest in books.

"While economic writers tell us how the economy will be in the next five years, our fiction writers can foresee the same state of the economy in the next 23 years."

Mr. Terence Humphreys, Director of the British Council, said the council is working with the youth to help them uncover their potentials.

Highlights of activities include workshop for young writers, reading of award-winning authors, soiree and literary interactions and a durbar.
