Panafest to focus on enhancing African's access to IT

Cape Coast (Central Region) 20 April 2001

A technological forum and exhibition, aimed at enhancing the African's knowledge of, and access to information technology, would be the focus of activities at the fifth Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival (Panafest), this year.

The Executive Secretary of the Panafest Foundation, Kohain Nathanyah Haveli disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Cape Coast, on Thursday.

This year's festival, which is scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 3 would be held on the theme: " The re-emergence of African Civilisation, with a sub-theme of " uniting the African family: bridging the gap through information technology".

Mr Halevi said experts on the subject from the international community, such as the Howard University in the United States, are expected to address the forum, which would be enhanced with the mounting of an exhibition of information technology systems by both local and foreign firms.

Mr Haveli said the forum and the exhibition would help in keeping Africa abreast with the times in realising her technological and socio-economic advancement.

He said it is in this regard, that this year's festival is focusing on information technology, instead of the colloquia held at previous celebrations.

Other activities earmarked, include a 'pan-African youth congress, a spiritual awakening concert, a fine arts exhibition, a reverential event/emancipation day and a durbar of chiefs and queenmothers.

Mr Halevi hinted that about 5,000 foreigners, comprising both participants and tourists, from the United States of America (USA), Europe, the Caribbean and other parts of Africa are expected to attend the six-day event, adding that 300 of them would come from Chicago in the USA alone.
