Power outage
disrupts Gospel music programme
Accra (Greater Accra) 17 April
2001
Frequent power outages by the
Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disrupted an Easter gospel night show at the
Trade Fair Site at La, Accra, leaving invited guests disappointed and causing
several million cedis in losses to the organisers.
The programme, organised by the
Rhema Christian Centre, a local Charismatic Church at La, and dubbed
"Easter Gospel Gala Night" on Easter Saturday, was to foster closer
unity among churches in the country and to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
Christ.
The first power interruption came
30 minutes after the programme started at 7.30 p.m. and lasted for about 45
minutes while the dejected guests were still glued to their seats, hoping that
the lights would come back.
Ten minutes after power was
restored, the second power failure Occurred, which prompted some of the guests
to make such comments as:
"Ah! ECG, what kind of
behaviour is this?"; "We can't pay any 300 per cent increase in
tariffs, you don't deserve it"; and "All they know is to spoil
people's gadgets".
Most of the guests, in the face of
the frequent outages, left in disappointment.
The Reverend Anibok Hawkson,
Resident Pastor, told the GNA that about five million cedis was spent on
advertisements and hiring of the pavilion and electrical gadgets.
He said the programme was the
second of its kind the church had undertaken to celebrate the resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
Among the local gospel artistes
invited to perform included Mary Ghansah, Blackcapella, Tom Bright Davies, Jude
Lomotey, and singing groups from some churches in the country.
