Reckless driver
fined one million cedis
Cape Coast (Central Region) 12
April 2001
A 27-year-old driver has been
fined one million cedis by the Cape Coast circuit court for killing 14 people
through reckless driving. Richard Asiamah will, in default, serve 12 months in
prison in hard labour.
The court, presided over by Mr
Justice Tom Bentil, banned Asiamah from driving for a year and ordered him to
surrender his driving license to the police for endorsement of the ban. Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo said on
January 13, this year, Asiamah, who was driving a KIA tipper truck with
registration number CR 388N from Mankessim to Agona Sewdru ignored a signal
from the police to slow down when he reached Ajumako Baa.
He said Asiamah drove into a group
of mourners who had mounted a roadblock, killing 14 of them instantly and
injuring several others.
Chief Inspector Amonoo said the
driver managed to escape when the mourners attacked him but his vehicle was set
ablaze. He said Asiamah reported the accident to the police.

Fowl thief goes
in for six months
Agona Swedru (Central Region) 12
April 2001
An Agona Swedru Community Tribunal
has sentenced John Kofi Danso, a farmer from Gomoa Akroful, to six months'
imprisonment with hard labour, for stealing a fowl, which a widow wanted to use
to celebrate the first anniversary of the death of her husband.
He pleaded guilty and was
convicted on his own plea.
The tribunal chaired by Mr Fatawu
A. Yakubu, heard that on February 14 at about 02:00 hours the Police on patrol
duty spotted Danso carrying a black rubber bag and questioned him.
When the bag was opened, the fowl
was found in it.
Danso led the Patrol team to the house
where he stole the fowl and woke up the occupants, who were fast asleep.
The owner of the fowl identified
it as hers and said she bought it for 25,000 cedis to celebrate the first
anniversary of the death of her husband.
Passing sentence, Mr Yakubu said
the panel members had taken into consideration of the previous convictions of
Danso and ordered the Police to return the fowl to the owner.
