Soccer-Police
asked to protect life and property
Accra (Greater Accra) 10 April
2001
The National Sports Council (NSC),
has appealed to the police to protect life and properties when discharging
their duties at the Accra Sports Stadium during football matches.
Mr Hammed Issaka, deputy Public
Relations Officer made the appeal on Monday
when GNA sports visited the
stadium to assess the NSC's preparation for the league season.
He regretted the situation where
the police looked on helplessly when a spectator destroyed about 60 plastic
chairs at a go during the FA gala.
Mr Issaka was unhappy that the
police, who are supposed to protect life and property, are often seen sitting
down watching matches and leaving immediately matches are over, claiming they
have duties elsewhere.
He said this behaviour of the
police gives some recalcitrant fans room to misbehave, resulting in extensive
damages, which could otherwise have easily been prevented.
"If this is to continue, by
next year we will have no chairs at all considering the rate at which they are
being broken, compounded by the cost of one chair which is about 16 dollars.''
He recalled that the use of the
Military Police at the stadium sometime back was very effective, because they
discharged their duties efficiently no matter how few they were.
"The police are equally good,
they can do it if they are really educated on their duty at the stadium".
Mr Issaka said every effort is
being made to arrest the person who will be surcharged when arrested, and added
that eyewitnesses are prepared to testify against him.
The cost of the damage, he said,
is estimated at over 20 million cedis.
Sixty chairs were broken by an
angry fan during the FA gala competition while others were destroyed during
various international competitions, bringing the total so far to 185.

Polo-Mustangs win
AFGO Polo Cup
Accra (Greater Accra) 10 April
2001
Mustangs beat Bishops 5-3 to win
the fifth annual Africa Ground Operations (AFGO) Polo Championship played at
the Accra Polo Grounds on Sunday.
The game, which was started on a
fast note, saw Mustangs scoring their first goal two minutes inside the first
chukka through Subhi Accad.
Jamil Ibrahim soon equalised for
Bishops but Danny Darko restored Mustangs lead in the second chukka when he
scored from an acute angle.
The third chukka was a balanced
game as Sani Bala and Ibrahim Mohammed scored a goal each for Mustangs while
Simon Tosh and Ricky Khubchandani also scored a goal each for Bishops.
Sani Bala however made victory
certain for Mustangs when he fired a 60-yarder shot which went straight into
the net a minute to end the forth chukka.
In a curtain raiser, Burkina Faso
drew 4-4 with Nandos.
Mr Daniel Awuah Darko, Captain of
Accra Polo Club thanked AFGO for their immense contributions towards the
development of the sport and called on other corporate bodies and organisations
to help develop the game.
Mr Koen Neven, Managing Director
of the company said his company would continue to sponsor the event in the
ensuing years.
