Accra (Greater Accra) 04 April 2001

A choral festival for selected senior secondary schools in the Accra Metropolis would be held on Saturday to provide a forum for the dissemination of Pan-African ideas.

The festival would be organised by the W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture, according to a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday by the Assistant Research Officer of the Centre Mr Daniel Agbeyebiawo.

The special guest for the occasion would be Madam Renee C Nebblett, a renowned educationist, scholar and Pan-Africanist.

The festival would showcase schools like the St John's Grammar, Wesley Grammar, Achimota, Ebenezer and the Aquinas Secondary schools.

The statement said the festival seeks to highlight the variety and value of African musical forms and generate interest in "our heritage of choral music among the youth".

It said the occasion would be climaxed with a rendition of "Plea from Africa", a composition by Mr John Knox Bokwe, by a massed choir.

The festival, which is intended to be an annual event, would subsequently feature schools from neighbouring West African countries.

"Plans are underway for the organisation of the sequel, involving schools from Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire and possibly Nigeria," the statement said.
