SSNIT obtains judgement against tenants

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 20 April 2000

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust  (SSNIT) said on Wednesday that it will soon auction properties of some tenants who owned the Trust huge sums in rent.

A statement in Accra said the action follows judgement given in favour of the Trust against the defaulters who include Magdanielli Design, which owes 135 million cedis and Ghana Air Shuttle Limited, which owes 104.2 million cedis.

It notice has been given to the Magdanielli apartments and they have vacated it to make way for the auction adding that "more properties will be seized if the amount realised is not enough to liquidate the entire debt."

In respect of Ghana Air Shuttle Ltd, the company has failed to pay the judgement debt and SSNIT has entered into execution against the company.

Five tenants have fully paid upon service of writ of summons and nine have made part payments. In December 1999, SSNIT instituted legal action against 25 tenants in its Trust Tower building in Accra following their failure to pay their rents, which totalled 1.3 billion cedis.
