Tribunal remands mechanic in custody for assaulting his uncle

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 April 2000

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday remanded in prison custody Daniel Obodai Torgbor, a radio mechanic, for allegedly smashing his uncle's face with a cylinder block.

Torgbor, is said to have taken offence because his uncle had reprimanded his sister for having had sex with her former husband in their father's bedroom.

Torgbor, 23, pleaded not guilty to causing harm and will appear again on Wednesday, April 19.

The tribunal, chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah heard that the complainant, Mr. Ebenezer Adjei, a 40-year-old carpenter, is the uncle of Torgbor and they both live in the same house at La in Accra.

On 4 April, this year, at about 12 noon, Mr. Adjei vehemently reprimanded Torshie, the sister of the accused, for having had an affair with her former husband in her father's bedroom.

The prosecution said Torshie reported her uncle to Torgbor at his workplace at Osu and he accompanied his sister to the uncle's house where a fight ensued between the accused and his uncle during which Torgbor is alleged to lifted an old cylinder block and smashed his uncle's face with it.

Mr. Adjei's face caved in and blood oozed from his nose, eyes and ears, the prosecution told the court.
