Vice-President opens 16th GUSA Games

Accra (Greater Accra) 13 April 2000

Vice-President John Evans Atta Mills has called on the private sector to contribute more to unearth talents in sports and

help in their development.

Prof Mills said although sports is considered a necessary ingredient for healthy living, most students at the tertiary level perceive it as a waste of time.

University of Cape Coast (UCC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana, Legon, University of Development Studies (UDS) and the University College of Education (UCE) are participating in the 10-day games.

Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, on the contrary said, the sacrifices being made by the Universities towards the progress of sports show that "while our Universities are concerned with the maintenance of high academic standards, they have not neglected sports."

He noted that the universities are demonstrating what they could contribute to sports development in Ghana through such games as well as strengthening the bonds of friendship among the universities.

In the opening hockey match, defending champions KNUST beat hosts UG by a lone goal. Kingsley Sarpong scored the only goal in the 14th minutes.

Earlier on, (UCC) thrashed KNUST 3-1 in the Men's Volleyball while Legon beat KNUST 2-0 in the Women's division.
