Father "goes inside" for his son.

Tema(Greater Accra) 12 April 2000

The Tema Community Tribunal on Monday remanded in custody, a 65 year old man who stood surety for his son in a motor bike stealing case but has repeatedly refused to bring him to stand trial.

When Stephen Tetteh appeared before the tribunal chaired by Capt. Philip Agbeyome (Rtd), he explained that his wife had sent the accused, Simon Mensah Tetteh, a Mechanic to Somenya, in the Eastern Region and could not tell when he would return.

Stephen Tetteh, a retired worker of Tema Textiles Limited (TTL), looked astonished and confused in the dock when the tribunal ordered that he be kept in custody until the son returns and was whisked away by the Police.

The tribunal remanded Samuel Ansah and Zakaria Mensah, both mechanics, in custody  for dishonestly receiving the motorbike. They pleaded guilty and are to re-appear on Wednesday, April 13.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Diana Adamu , told the tribunal that somewhere in 1999, the complainant, Nana Kwaku Dabanka, gave his unregistered Yamaha motorbike to Simon for repairs at the cost of 30,000 cedis, for which he paid.

She said when Nana Dabanka later went to the mechanic to demand his bike, it could not be traced and a report was made to the Police. On 12 February, Nana Dabanka saw the motorbike with Zakaria and caused his arrest.

During investigations, Zakaria said he bought the bike from Ansah, who mentioned Simon as the one who sold it to him. Simon

Upon arrest was granted bail but has never been seen.

Surveyor before court for fraud

Cape Coast (Central Region) 12 April 2000

A Surveyor who allegedly duped two traders of 8.9 million cedis under the pretext of helping them to acquire two plots of land has appeared before a Cape Coast Circuit Court.

George Mensah, 53, was on Monday granted 10 million cedis bail with one surety to be justified and will reappear on 2 May. He pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences.

In the dock with Mensah were Paul Amo Quayson, 74, unemployed and Kofi Nketsia, 68, and head of Quayson family of Kwaprow, charged with abetting and defrauding by false pretences. They also pleaded not guilty and were granted four million cedis bail to re-appear on the same day.

The Court heard that in September last year, the two traders Madam Akua Kakraba and Madam Adwoa Ammisah approached Mensah to assist them to acquire plots of land at Pedu near Cape Coast.

Mensah later told them that the cost of each plot of land was 4.8 million cedis and the women paid 9.6 million cedis to Mensah, who in turn gave the money to Nketsia.

The Prosecution said Akua and Adwoa started developing the land but were asked to stop work by some people, who claimed the land to be theirs. As a result the women contacted the three men but they could not offer any explanation.

They, therefore, reported the matter to the Police who arrested the accused persons and found them guilty of the offence.

Mensah told the court that five million cedis out of the amount has been paid to the Police, at this juncture Mr. Justice Tom Bentil, the presiding judge, asked the Police to hand over the money to the court registrar.
