Two Ghanaian films launched

Accra (Greater Accra) 11 April 2000

The KAMA Marketing and Distribution Company, distributors of GAMA Film Productions is to secure accommodation for Araba Stamp, the first Ghanaian actress, who is said to be homeless.

Mr. Godfred K. Quansah, Managing Director of the company said on Monday at the launching of two Ghanaian films - "Market Affair" and "I Told You So" in Accra.

He said, "I Told You So", which featured Araba in 1960s, was improved upon to preserve the culture of the country.

Someone who has contributed a lot to the film industry could not be left as a mere pauper on the streets, he lamented and appealed to the public to join hands with the company to resettle Araba.

Mr. Quansah called on stakeholders in the industry to encourage the production of films in the local languages to promote the country's cultural heritage.

The cassettes that cost between 12,000 cedis and 15,000 cedis would be available in shops throughout the country.

Mr. Nick Teye, Director of "Market Affair", said the story apart from depicting the real market situations, is also a way of organising people to solve a common problem. "Market Affair' sets out to correct unprofessional way a lot of people conduct their businesses."

The Ghanaian market woman, he said, is very well versed in business matters but when it comes to managing her finances, she loses out.

Mr. Khairuddin Othman, Chief Executive Officer of GAMA Films Company, called on the public to patronise films produced locally to help the industry survive.

He said many local producers are forced to hold on production because of high cost of production, tapes and other materials.

"To address the situation, the GAMA Film Company has introduced a new package for producers whereby they will pay 50 per cent of cost of production and the remaining would be paid while the film is being screened in GAMA theatre."

Artists, who featured in "Market Affairs", included Idikoko, Regina Pornortey, Godson Hadja, Ricky Adelayita, Joyce Afful, Orman Shariff Captan and Hannah Odjenma Botchway.
