Liberty thrashed Dawu 3-0

Accra (Accra) 10 April 2000

Liberty Professionals maintained the top spot on the ABC Premier League after 1997 goalking, Kofi Deblah scored twice and one from Albert Neequaye clinched them a 3-0 win over visiting Dawu Youngsters at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The win which ensured Liberty maintain an unbeaten record saw the homesters dominating the early stages of the game and came close to scoring in the 13th minute but Benard Aryee's shot was saved by keeper Yusif Danladi.

In the 26th minute however, Danladi had no reponse to a terrific shot from striker Kofi Deblah after pouncing on a loose ball outside the box to rifle in a 25-metre shot for the first goal.

Liberty pushed for more goals from then on but Dawu resorted to effective off side traps to frustrate the 'professionals'.

Dawu brought on John Plange and Samuel Tetteh for Justice Opoku and Senanu Bright in the 46th and 57th minutes and could have redeemed the tally but erratic shooting in the 55th and 64th minutes coupled with good goalkeeping by Liberty's Luis Quainoo kept the scores intact.

Dawu pushed more men forward in their attempt to get the equaliser but it was the 'professionals' who smiled again when Deblah broke loose to register the second goal for his side in the 81st minute.

When everything pointed to a two-goal win for Liberty, substitute Albert Neequaye added to his side's tally deep into injury time.

Goldfields pip Bofoakwa

Obuasi (Ashanti Region)

A 65th-minute goal by Nana Arhin-Dua gave Obuasi Goldfields a hard fought 1-0 win over visiting Tano Bofoakwa in their match played at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Goldfields, determined to erase the 0-1 defeat handed them by Kawebibirem United last Saturday, put up a spirited display but wasted begging chances in the 11th, 13th and 23rd minutes.

The visitors countered strongly but in the process wasted two corner kicks in the 34th and 36th minutes.

The homesters maintained their pressure for the leader in the second half but poor

finishing deprived them of a goal until the 65th minute when Arhin-Dua, who had a terrible day found the net.

Olympics devoured at Cape Coast

Cape Coast (Central Region)

Striker Alexander Tachie-Mensah scored a hat-trick as Dwarfs beat troubled Accra Great Olympics 3-1 at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Ironically, it was the visitors who scored first in the ninth minute through Amui Quaye who finished off a neat pass by Wisdom Abbey. Dwarfs lifted their game after that early scare by Olympics and managed to equalise in the 18th minute through Tachie-Mensah who meandered through a crowded defence to slam in the equaliser.

Tachie-Menson was on target again in the 33rd minute when he headed home a free-kick by team-mate Iddrisu Alhassan.

The striker sealed the doom for Olympics in the 47th minute with a third goal that left the Dade boys confused.

With their pride dented Olympics fought back gallantly in search of more goals but the resolute defence of Dwarfs held them in check till the final whistle.

Kotoko secures second win

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo)

Kumasi Asante Kotoko halted their string of defeats in the on-going ABC Premier League with 1-0 win over B.A. United at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

The victory, sent their supporters who accompanied them to Sunyani, into spontaneous celebrations. It was earned through a header by their hardworking midfielder Godwin Ablordey in the 73rd minute following a cross from substitute Shilla Alhassan.

Kotoko could have registered more goals, but spectacular saves from the goalkeeper Sampson Tetteh of B.A and hard tackles from the defencemen of Mohammed Yaps and Godfried Yeboah robbed them of the opportunity.

B.A United, who played a solid midfield game, also came close to scoring on a number of occasions but indecision on the part of their strikers robbed them of any goal.

Power in resounding victory

Koforidua (Eastern Region)

Koforidua-based Power F/C crushed visiting Sekondi Hasaacas to a 3-0 defeat in their ABC Premier League match played at the Koforidua Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Hasaacas started the match strongly and gave the false impression of teaching Power some football lessons with good ball distribution, spearheaded by good-old Kofi Abbrey.

However, after the first ten minutes, tiredness set into the Sekondi boys and they conceded the first goal in the 14th minute, when right-winger Ebo Mensah powered home a cracker for the homesters after capitalisng on a defensive mix-up.

Power mounted a series of raids and could have increased their score line, but poor shooting up front robbed them of their chances.

Power scored their second goal in the 54th minute when the left-winger, Yaw Achampong outpaced his marker to lay the ball for inside left Dennis Odoom to connect home.

Moments before closing, substitute Samuel Owusu curled a freekick beautifully into Hasaacas net for the third goal of the afternoon.

Faisal, Kwaebibirem draw

Kumasi (Ashanti Region)

Asuom Kwaebibirem United and King Faisal settled for a 2-2 drawn game in their sixth week ABC Premier league match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium at the weekend.

It was a balanced game and the visitors gave their opponents a scare in the 13th minute when they nearly shot ahead but a cross from leading striker Oppong Kyekyeku flew across goal with no one to connect.

Let off the hook, Faisal turned the heat on the visitors and in a goalmouth action Nana Frempong scored the opener with a brilliant header in the 31st minute.

The monarchs could have made added another goal in five minutes later but striker Eric Gawu shot wide in front of goal. The game became a ding-dong battle until the 40th minute when outside-left Osei Kofi equalised for Kwaebibirem when he nodded home a free-kick by left full-back Awuley Musah.

Osei Kofi was on target again on the stroke of half time when he capitalised on a defensive blunder by right full-back Robert Oduro to beat goalkeeper Sampson Appiah to increase the tally for his side.

Faisal brought on J. B. Dankwah and Ben Wilson for Eric Gawu and Kwabena Opoku in the second half and it paid off when Joe Agyeman brought them on level terms after Kwaebibirim's Victor Antwi handled the ball in the box.

Okwawu rout RTU

Nkawkaw (Eastern Region)

Okwawu United made amends on their recent chain of defeats when they trashed Real Temale United (RTU) 4-0 in their ABC Premier League match played at the Nkawkaw Park.

RTU kicked off but lost to Okwawu who piled up pressure and had five corner kicks in the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 13th and 20th minutes but failed to utilise any of them.

Okwawu scored the first goal in the 32nd minute through inside-left Yaw Berko when his beautiful header from right full back Kwasi Asante's free kick beat goalie Mohammed Suraju.

The 'soccer mounataineers' could have increased the scores before the end of the first half but their attackers failed to convert three chances in the 37th, 40th and 43rd minutes.

Okwawu maintained their superiority on the game and got the second goal through a penalty, when RTU right half back Ahmed Yakubu fouled inside right Abdul Mijima in the box, which was perfectly taken by skipper Ismaila Iddrisu.

Two more goals in the 71st minute and 89th minutes through Eddy Acquah and Douglas Addy sealed the doom of the visitors.

5th week outstanding matches due to continental assignments were honoured with Dwarfs drawing 1-1 with Tema Ghapoha while Great Olympics were beaten 2-0 by Liberty Prof. The outstanding match between Hearts and Hasaacas did not come on due to late arrival from Guinea by Hearts. Hearts’ sixth week match with Ghapoha was also declared outstanding because seven Hearts players were among the Black Stars squad that played against Tanzania in the World Cup qualifying match on Sunday.
