Planning committee for Emancipation Day inaugurated

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 8 April 2000

A 31-member National Planning Committee for this year's Emancipation Day celebration was on Thursday inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Mike Gizo.

The committee, chaired by Nana Paddy Acheampong, Deputy Minister of Tourism, would plan and execute activities for the celebrations starting from July 26 to August 1.

This is the third celebration of the historic day, which is meant to link Africans in the Diaspora to their ancestral homes and to remember the atrocities meted out to Africans during the obnoxious slave trade era.

Mr Gizo said cultural tourism and products are being developed in the country and called on the committee and operators in tourism to inject professionalism into the sector to realise the desired impact. The Minister urged the committee members to work as a team to ensure successful celebrations.

Responding to questions from the media on the achievements of the previous celebrations, the Minister said the institution of the celebrations has made a lot of impact.

He said that apart from boosting the image of the country, international contacts and awareness have been created.

Nana Acheampong gave the assurance that the committee would work hard for better results.

He said sub-committees would be formed to deal with specific areas.
