Soccer-Oly wonder show Power

Accra (Greater Accra), 29th April '99 -

Accra Great Olympics lived up to their accolade "the wonder club" when they came back from a 2-0 deficit to score three goals within 10 minutes for a 3-2 victory over Power F/C in their 10th week ABC premier league match played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

Power scored their goals in the first half through James Amarquaye and Charles Asamoah in the 34th and 41st minute while Olympics scored through Charles Taylor in the 71st minute and Wisdom Abbey in the 75th and 79th minutes.

Olympics took the kick off and mounted early pressure on the visitors in a bid to find the opening goal. This resulted in goalkeeper Emmanuel Doe of Power being booked in the fifth minute when he saved a sticky situation outside the penalty area with his hands.

The homesters continued with pressure which earned them a goal scoring opportunity in the 14th minute but, with only the Power goalie to beat, unmarked Abbey headed off target, a pass from Amui Quaye.

Power warmed themselves into the game, repulsed the attack and, with some swift man-to-man passes, opened gaps in the fractured Olympics defence.

In the 34th minute, the determination of the visitors paid off when a two-man move found Nathan Quarshie who sent a pass for Amaquaye to shoot into the net.

Power F/C were on target again in the 41st minute when Asamoah rounded two Olympics defenders and fired from an acute angle into the net for the second goal.

Rainfall greeted both teams from the recess as the pitch became soggy, making ball control difficult but this served as a blessing for the homesters as their attacking machinery sprang back into live with Taylor ripping apart the Power defence.

In one of his surging runs upfront in the 50th minute, the Olympics striker beat goalkeeper Doe but the Power goalie managed to save the situation with his legs.

In the 58th minute, Power pulled off Obeng Twumasi for Kingsley Kafui while Olympics brought on Raja Nuredeen for Amui Quaye in the 61st minute.

The changes worked in favour of the homesters as they pulled a goal back in the 71st minute through Taylor.

He took a pass half way inside the visitors' area and slipped through their defence to score the first goal for his side.

Four minutes later, Olympics came on level terms with the visitors when Abbey headed into the net a free-kick from the foot of Taylor.

In the 79th minute, Abbey was on hand again when he tapped into the net a corner-kick, once again from the foot of Taylor.

The visitors' chances of a comeback were dashed when, with seven minutes to the end of proceedings, substitute Kafui was sent off for the second bookable offence.
